Q. Can I have a worm composting bin in my home?
A. Yes you can! A small worm composting bin in the home for recycling food scraps is very popular.

Q. Will it smell?
A. Worm bins should have an earthy smell. There are techniques that, when practiced, can prevent foul smells coming from an indoor bin.

Q. What type of food can feed my worms:
A. Most organic matter such as fruit and vegetable scraps, weeds/grasses, decomposing wood/branches. The list can vary some when you are considering the difference between an indoor and an outdoor worm composting bin. Certain things you want to stay away from with an indoor bin but are fine in an outdoor one. DIWW is available to answer your questions should you have any about this subject. Here’s an article from New Mexico State University with more worm composting FAQ.

Q. How fast do the worms reproduce?
A. For an outdoor worm composting bed the spring through fall months is when red wigglers will generally double their population every 90 days. They tend to slow down during the cold winter months. An indoor bin stays reproductively active year-round. Of course there are other factors besides temperature that can affect worm reproduction.

Q. Can I create a worm habitat in my garden?
A. Of course you can! The worms and your garden will LOVE IT!!! Certain conditions need to exist in order for the worms to survive and thrive. #1, plenty of organic matter mixed into the soil for the worms to feed on and help retain moisture and #2, plenty of moisture. In more arid climates it is recommended to top-dress with a quicker decomposing mulch like leaves or straw. This will help retain moisture for the worms and also eventually break down and become worm food! Soil with high organic matter content can also help retain water.
